The Case Of The Missing Article

For the past several days, Ornery Reports staff have been turning these offices upside down in a frantic search for Article #23. We know it was here as recently as a week ago, but we have been unable to locate it. As you, Dear Reader, can see, there is a gap in the Article Archives where it should be and we are ashamed to admit that we do not even know its name. Interesting and useful natural compounds have also been obtained from microbial sources. The drug LSD (lysergic acid diethylamide) is chemically related to useful medicinal agents found in the fungus ergot. A series of compounds found in ergot have been used to treat migraine headaches, help contract the uterus at term, stop postpartum hemorrhage and treat Parkinson’s disease among others. Other fungi and bacteria have helped produce a variety of antibiotics to treat infectious diseases. A category of soil bacteria, Actinomycetes, has provided us with more commercially useful antibiotics than any other group of microorganism. Continue reading Pharmacognosy Post 3

Don’t Be Fooled!

You started an exercise routine to lose weight. You began running, walking, biking and/or attending aerobic classes regularly. You also started strength training — using weight machines and even dumbbells.

Relatively recent trends to replace crude plant drugs with their biologically active compounds started in the 18th century with the pioneering work of Carl Scheele, who isolated organic acids from plants. This discovery was followed by several similar ones with Friedrich Serturner’s success in isolating morphine from opium and Pierre Pelletier and Joseph Caventou isolating quinine from the cinchona bark. These achievements initiated the field of phytochemistry. A recent study showed that among prescription drugs marketed between 1983 and 1994, 44% were either of natural origin or derived semi-synthetically from natural substances. Birth Control in a Shot

It’s a shot in the arm for birth control — literally. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has just approved an injectable contraceptive. It’s called Lunelle. Continue reading Birth Control in a Shot

Why so glum, chum?

It’s a positively depressing time to be in the HiTech industry, isn’t it?

Venture capitalists don’t return your calls, the market is in a funk, stock options are, well, not an option. TV reporters crow about the fact that another dot-com retailer has shut down. Newspapers trumpet the end of the e-biz revolution.

Fact or Fiction?

Remember, it was widely believed the world was flat and that a curveball was actually just an optical illusion (studies have shown conclusively that a curveball can break up to 19 inches!). Sorry, but just because dad says it is so doesn’t necessarily make it make it true. Continue reading Fact or Fiction?
